何人かの画家の人生を振り返る。作品だけ見るかぎりでは、「この人は平穏無事で楽勝の人生だったんじゃないか。うらやましいものだ」という気がします。しかしいろいろ資料を読んだり、あるいはその年代の歴史を調べたりすると、大抵の場合名を遺すほどの画家はとんでもない苦労をしている。そもそも苦労をしない人は、いい絵を残さないのだろうと思う。

なんだか最近自分が戦争中の画家のような気がしてくる。現代は動乱の時代だと思う。だからこそ、マイペースで一つ一つ積み上げていこう。それが今年の抱負です。
